Here we report some recent biophysical issues on the preparation of solute-filled lipid vesicles and their relevance to the construction of “synthetic cells.” First, we introduce the “semi-synthetic minimal cells” as the liposome-based cell-like systems, which contain a minimal number of biomolecules required to display simple and complex biological functions. Next, we focus on recent aspects related to the construction of synthetic cells. Emphasis is given to the interplay between the methods of synthetic cell preparation and the physics of solute encapsulation. Over the last 80 years, malting and brewing has evolved through increased scientific understanding, driven by numerous factors including efficiency improvement, cost reduction, quality enhancement, risk minimisation, brand marketing and image enhancement. The aim of this work was to review the historical trends in global brewing research in order to identify current opportunities and emerging trends, as well as uncover future key drivers. A bibliometric analysis was performed with English language peer reviewed literature from the Scopus database together with mapping using the VOSviewer clustering software. The bibliometric results were structured to identify which affiliations, authors, and journals have been involved in brewing research, as well as the average number of citations per paper. The bibliometric mapping yielded ‘research term maps’, where the words occurring more frequently in the research papers were grouped in coloured clusters by area of interest, and their relationships indicated. The year maps revealed which average terms tended to emerge in chronological order. The estimated average citation number per paper was about nine. Countries, including Spain, Czech Republic, Italy and Belgium displayed higher average citation scores than the world average. In the period 1940-79, brewing publications were mainly process oriented whereas between 2008-18, there was a shift in focus to the consumer (health and social responsibility) and to environmental sustainability. © 2020 The Institute of Brewing & Distilling  相似文献

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult cells with self-renewing capacities. MSCs display specific properties, such as the ability to repair damaged tissues, resulting in optimal candidates for cell therapy against degenerative diseases. In addition to the reparative functions of MSCs, growing evidence shows that these cells have potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, MSCs are potential tools for treating inflammation-related neurological diseases, including epilepsy. In this regard, over the last decades, epilepsy has no longer been considered a purely neuronal pathology, since inflammatory events underlying the genesis of epilepsy have been demonstrated. This review assessed current knowledge on the use of MSCs in the treatment of epilepsy. Mostly, attention will be focused on the anti-inflammatory and immunological skills of MSCs. Understanding the mechanisms by which MSCs might modulate the severity of the disease will contribute to the development of new potential alternatives for both prophylaxis and treatment against epilepsy.  相似文献

Tomato waste is characterised by high amounts of bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids, polyphenols and essential fatty acids. In this work, oleoresins were produced from tomato waste (skins + seeds) and skins using carbon dioxide under liquid and supercritical conditions. The use of ethanol as a co-solvent was also evaluated. Compositions of the oleoresins were analysed and compared to oleoresin obtained by means of an organic solvent, which was used as the control. Oleoresin extraction from the waste by liquid and supercritical CO2 provided the highest yields (12.5%–12.9%). The extracts obtained from the skins with supercritical CO2 without ethanol had the highest content of α- and γ-tocopherols (80 and 575 mg/100 g oleoresin, respectively), while lycopene and β-carotene were found at 205 and 75 mg/100 g oleoresin, respectively. The highest quantity of polyphenols (9305 mg GAE/100 g oleoresin) was found in the oleoresin extracted from skin by supercritical CO2 with ethanol. All oleoresins were characterised by a high antioxidant activity, which improved with the synergy of carotenoids, tocopherols and polyphenols.  相似文献
